About the book:

Order of the Dragon Knights Series
Author: Mary Morgan
Genre: Time-travel Paranormal Romance
Heat level: Spicy

Blurb

They were an ancient order, descended from the great Tuatha Dé Danann, the Sidhe, or in simpler terms: the Fae. Half-human and half-fae, each knight blessed with mystical powers. Given to them were holy relics from the Fae and guardianship over their Dragons.

They were known as the Dragon Knights.

However, some believed the Order had too much power and they tried to possess it for themselves. They were evil and twisted, and their plan succeeded one fateful night. The brothers of the Clan MacKay—Dragon Knights, fought a battle. Blood spilled onto holy ground, bringing forth the wrath of the Fae. Their relics were taken, and the Order was banished—each name stricken from the hallowed halls of the Fae.

The Clan MacKay is no longer.

The Dragon Knights have scattered across the land.

Yet out of the darkness, they will each fight for redemption, and the women they love.

Chatting with author Deb Aronson

I'm thrilled to have Deb Aronson, author of How to Raise a Rhino, with me today. Her non-fiction middle-grade biography is currently on sale through bookshop.org, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and anywhere else books are sold.

Save the Date! Deb is having a virtual book launch hosted by Save the Rhino International on June 15. Click here to register for the event!

Before we learn more about this fun book, let's get to know Deb!

Deb, can you tell us about the research you did before writing this book?

I first heard about Anna Merz from her obituary, which had an accompanying photo of a full grown rhino resting its chin on her shoulder. My response was, “Whoa!!” what’s the story here? I did some online research, tracked down Anna’s goddaughter, met with her in Cornwall, England. She put me in touch with many, many people who had known and worked with Anna when she was alive. The next thing I knew, I was on a safari to Kenya, to the sanctuary Anna had created, where I stood at the site of her home (which had been dismantled per her request upon her death), saw black rhinos for myself (along with elephants, cheetahs, lions, hyenas, warthogs and more) and tried to imagine what her life must have been like by talking to many people who knew her.

Tell us about a book that stayed with you long after you finished reading it.

An adult book that I can’t stop thinking about is The Water Dancer, by Ta Nehisi Coates. The tone of this book was at times menacing, at times magical and at times eye-opening. It’s the first book I’ve read that shows how white allies’ goals can be very different from their black brethren’s goals. The magical realism in it made the story feel other worldly, but the brutality of the plantations and the life of what he calls the “Taskers” is heart rending.

A Sporting Chance: How Ludwig Guttmann Created the Paralympic Games (MG NF), by Lori Alexander. It never occurred to me to wonder how the Paralympic Games came to be, but Alexander does a great job weaving in both Guttmann’s personal experiences and world events that intersected in such a way as to create this idea and opportunity for Guttmann. It’s also really well illustrated with both photographs and drawings. This is a book I wish I had written!

How did you become an author?

I always loved to read but I never imagined myself as an author. Who would want to read what I had to say? The journey from that mindset to now was a long one with plenty of stumbles. I did a lot of short form writing for non-profits most of my career but at some point I wanted a new challenge; to write for kids and to try my hand at fiction. The fiction part fizzled, but I got the opportunity to write a MG biography of E.B. White, my hero, and that got me started on my current path.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less.

Exuberant, shy, energetic, lazy and multi-faceted!

About the book

How to Raise a Rhino
Author: Deb Aronson
Genre: MG NF (biography)

Have you ever wondered, what you would do if you saw an animal on the brink of extinction?

Blurb
After growing up in stodgy, post-WWII London, Anna Merz is determined to live a life of grand adventure. She spends much of her life in Ghana, racing horses, exploring the Sahara, and rescuing orphaned wild animals that are dropped at her door.

Anna Merz retired to Kenya anticipating plenty of rest and relaxation. Instead, she found her true calling: that of Kifaru Mama—Rhino Mama. After witnessing the slaughter of wild animals sold for their parts, Anna is determined to rescue the highly endangered black rhino, the dodo of the modern world—ungainly creatures destined for extinction. From building eight-foot-tall fences around five thousand acres of land, to darting rhinos from helicopters and trucking them to safety, Anna works to save one black rhino at a time.

When faced with having to raise a newborn rhino abandoned by her mother or let it die, Anna learns by trial and error to not only keep baby Samia alive but to raise her so she’ll be able to live on her own.

How to Raise a Rhino is the true story of Anna Merz who helped establish the Ngare Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary, which became the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Readers of all ages will cheer Anna on as she faces and defeats every obstacle with unwavering perseverance to save the black rhino from being poached to extinction.

Peek between the pages...

A slow-moving convoy drove away from the bright lights of Nairobi, toward the snowy peaks of Mt. Kenya to the north. The armed men in the lead truck held their rifles at the ready. Their eyes constantly scanned the vicinity, prepared to shoot to kill to protect their cargo. The third and last truck carried more armed men dressed in the same khaki uniforms of the Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS). And a veterinarian.

Between them, a pickup truck carried a large wooden crate.

Wedged next to the crate sat a little, brown-haired white woman.

The woman shivered in the cold night air; she worried about the creature in the crate; she knew an attack could come at any moment. She was cold. She was anxious. She was scared.

She was ecstatic.

This was Anna Merz and the crate held her dreams. Anna had created a vast sanctuary where black rhinos could live safe from poachers. All she needed was rhinos to fill it. These first black rhinos would have babies and those babies would have babies and in this way the population of black rhinos might slowly recover.

The presence of this first, real-live rhino made her dream feel possible.

“Many people have asked me, ‘why rhinos?’” she wrote. “Did I particularly like them or have a ‘thing’ about them? The answer is very simple: the rhinos are in Kenya and I was in Kenya, and the rhinos were in terrible trouble.”

About the author:

Deb has been a freelance writer for kids since 2008, when she joined SCBWI. She loves to write nonfiction stories about ordinary people (usually women) doing extraordinary things; stories she wishes she’d had in middle school.

“How to Raise a Rhino” is her third children’s book.

Her true story of the famous filly who beat all the boys Alexandra the Great: The Record-Breaking Filly Who Ruled the Racetrack was published by Chicago Review Press in 2017.

Deb has 12 houseplants, 7 boats, 2 kids and one cat. When she’s not writing or researching, Deb likes to sail, putter in her garden and read, though not all at the same time.

Her fourth book, “King Cobras”, will come out in August 2023.

Get Book 1, CHUPACARTER now!

My thoughts...

I'm halfway through this entertaining and humorous children's book. Jorge and his friends are searching for an arsonist. It may or may not be the dreaded, terrifying haunted piñata, which makes an appearance in this small town every six years. Together with Carter, their chupacabra friend, Jorge and his friend muster up the courage needed to chase down the clues, many with laugh-out-loud outcomes. They haven't yet found the culprit, but I'm excited to continue reading to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

Oh, and I can't forget to mention the lively illustrations sprinkled throughout the book.

Guest Author: Emilia Ramos Samper

I'm delight to welcome Emilia Ramos Samper to my blog. She is a young author of fantasy novel, CROWN OF SCALES AND WONDER. But instead of me telling you more about this talented young lady, I'm going to let her. Please help me welcome Emilia to my blog!

The Story of a Ten-Year-Old Published Author
Emilia Ramos Samper

Hello, my name is Emilia Ramos Samper, and I am the kid author of the fantasy novel Crown of Scales and Wonder. I’m so glad to be here on Cherie’s blog sharing my experience as a young author! Since I published my debut novel, it’s been my mission to support other young writers. The most common question they ask me is: Why write so young? What inspired you to write?

Well, it all started during the pandemic. Ever since I can remember, reading and writing have been my escape from a not-so-perfect world. When I write, I become a different person in a different world. One day after virtual school, I sat down at my computer and started writing an idea that had been stuck in my head. I read it to my family during dinner, and they begged me for the next chapter. Really, I owe my writing success to my family and the quarantine.

Writing was hard, as are so many of the things we love. I would sit down every day and wouldn’t stop until I wrote 1,000 words. Throughout the course of the quarantine, I plunked out every idea in my head. Today, it has taken form as a 240-page fantasy novel with a sequel coming out next year!

While writing, I struggled with imposter syndrome quite a bit: You’re too young. You’re never going to make it as a writer. For this reason, I’ve begun to speak at schools and share my journey with other young people. It is my mission to make sure that no other kid ever feels like they’re alone in the pursuit of their dreams.

The world is a blank page. And it’s never, ever too young to start writing your story.

Crown of Scales and Wonder
Author: Emilia Ramos Samper
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

A princess of dark blood. An agent of a scarred revolution. A kingdom tormented by scale and shadow.

Blurb: In a kingdom torn apart by dark magic and a million-year war, Princess Naomi Elistaire searches for answers amidst the facade of her palace imprisonment. With an irreversible gift ready to destroy her and a martyred father buried in a web of lies, who’s to say which way fate will turn?

Deep underground, Agent Ez Shores trains everyday at the dragon base, waiting for the revolution, the day to kill the Queen. But as dangerous bloodlines reveal themselves and a seemingly suicidal mission is handed to him, Ez finds himself locked in the palace dungeons, facing the daughter of his worst enemy.

Lies.

Love.

Revolution.

About the author:
Emilia Ramos Samper is one of the youngest people to ever publish a novel. She published her debut novel, Crown of Scales and Wonder when she was ten and her second book is coming out this year. She has won 1st place in the LaPlume Young Writer's Contest, as well as the Literary Icon Award at the 2022 LitFest.

Chatting with author Ginny Frost

I'm thrilled to welcome Ginny Frost to my blog, and to spotlight her latest book, Artist. Discover the inspiration behind the book, learn about the author, and read an excerpt of this exciting new book.

Please help me welcome, Ginny!

What inspired you to write this book?

I’ve wanted to write this book for a long time. I went on a writer’s retreat where I was shamed for being a romance author. The experience left me a little bitter, like my character, Lexi. The idea sat idle until I became involved with a wonderful group of authors. The Mortar & Pestle series seemed a great place to finally tell Lexi’s story. I’d also like to mention I live near Yaddo, an artist’s retreat in Saratoga Springs, New York. The grounds are beautiful and supremely inspiring.

What are you reading?

I’m a voracious reader of audiobooks. I usually read over 150 books a year but only two or three on paper. Listening to a story lets me get work done around the house, exercise, and cross stitch. (I cross stitch quite a bit.) Every year I complete a reading challenge and blog the books. It’s a great way to read something new or unexpected.

Can you tell us something about yourself?

I love story. I’ve been writing, either on paper or in my head since I was eleven. Apparently, I was writing fan-fiction before it was a thing. I rewrote The Outsiders, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars in my head for years. I always added a romantic element. As an adult, a good friend urged me to write down my original romances and work toward getting published. Twelve years later, here I am with nine books and hundreds of ideas for more.

About the book:

Artist
Author: Ginny Frost
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Heat level: Closed door

Stuck at a retreat with her ex, Lexi is torn between reviving her art and rekindling an old romance.

Blurb

Lexi Pintari is stuck in a dead-end cubicle job that is slowly killing her. She tucked away her passion for art when the love of her life ghosted her after college. Witnessing her lack of motivation, Lexi’s best friend drags her to an art retreat for much-needed reflection and inspiration. Though knowing her ex-boyfriend is an artist-in-residence there, Lexi agrees to go. Unfortunately, her metal-goth style and enthusiasm for graphic comics clash with the pastel-scarf-wearing, tea-sipping participants, making her ex the least of her problems.

Cole MacDougall is blocked. His rise to the top of the modern art scene is crushed by a missing muse. He is desperate to paint again, but the canvas remains blank. Due to the shortage of patronage revenue, he is forced to put up with the groupie-students. Until he sees a woman standing out like a sore thumb in ripped jeans and a leather jacket. Lexi. Hope blooms that he can renew his passion through her.

For two weeks, Lexi and Cole work together, discovering what they’ve lost professionally and personally. Will a magical Mortar & Pestle show them how to connect the broken lines and seal their destiny?

About the author: Ginny Frost is a hybrid author with two novels from The Wild Rose Press and four indie titles. She writes contemporary romance with a sexy, funny kick. In her downtime, she plays clerk at the local library—the perfect job to feed her reading addiction. She lives in upstate NY with her very own kindhearted ogre, their two smart and sassy daughters, and an evil cat named Flash.

Chatting with author Darlene Fredette

I'm delighted to welcome Darlene Fredette back to my blog. Today, we'll learn her favorite comfort food and the inspiration behind her newest book, Trickster. Plus, she shared and excerpt and has an exciting giveaway you won't want to miss.

Please help me to welcome, Darlene!

Hi, Darlene. Can you tell us what inspired you to write Trickster?

Jade Parsons, the heroine in Trickster, had cameo appearances in two other books in my Redford Falls series. She was supposed to get her own story a while back, but other characters kept butting in line. I was asked to join a group of six other authors to chat about writing and publishing. Someone brought up the idea of writing a series together about a magical mortar and pestle. I immediately thought of Jade and knew this would be her moment to shine.

How exciting! I love when characters from one book show up in there own books! Tell us, what are you reading?

I read and review books for my magazine, so I always have a book open. I finished a mystery suspense and just started a contemporary. My go-to reads are romance and I like a variety of romance categories such as contemporary, mystery, fantasy, paranormal, and western.

One last question. What is your favorite comfort food?

I had to answer this question because when I’m feeling under the weather, I always say “I’m having my comfort food to make me feel better.” I love rice and my favourite way to prepare it is mixed with soya sauce and chicken. Then cover it with mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. Yum!

Thanks, Darlene, for taking the time to answer my questions!

Now, lets learn about Trickster!

About the book

Trickster

Peek between the pages

Two weeks ago, Eric had aired his family’s dirty laundry. Probably unintentional on his part, but he revealed the reason behind his frustration toward his father, and Jade gave her unwelcomed input.

Today she exposed her secret, which felt exhilarating. “I only wanted you to understand you have to let go of the past to be present in the future.”

“And I’m trying. My father and I are on a good path to rebuilding our relationship and for that, I thank you. You forced me to see the error of my ways. I’m sorry for taking out my problems on you. You didn’t deserve my grouchy moods. I was rude and obnoxious.” He raised a brow. “Can you forgive me? Can we start over?”

Smiling, she squinted. “Who are you?”

He strode forward and held out a hand. “I’m Eric Martini. Nice to meet you.”

“No.” Jade pointed a finger. “You, sir, are a trickster.”

“Excuse me?”

“A trickster is someone who has many sides. Disruptive and helpful, troublemaker and hero. I know the man in the office. But I don’t know the man standing in front of me.” She clasped his hand, and a flurry of tingles surged the length of her arm. Warmth flushed her cheeks. Without thinking, she leaned up on her toes and kissed Eric’s cheek. “Thank you for being my hero today.”

Exciting news & Giveaway!

Trickster is currently on sale for 0.99 and is also available on KU.

But wait! There’s more! I’m giving away a free PDF copy of The Mortar and Pestle Preview. This preview document is similar to the free prequel offered in Book Funnel, but the preview has tons of additional fun stuff – more graphics, book teasers, an inside look at how the series came to life, and much more! No rafflecopter, no contest, and no drawing of names. Just send me a note through the secure Contact Form. It’s that easy!
