Peek between the pages of Damned When I Didn't

Imagine waking up one day and finding out you’re a succubus. A female demon who feeds on human intimacy. And you’re a virgin. That’s the nightmare that Avery Williams faces in my YA paranormal romance, Damned When I Didn’t, a unique coming of age story about family, friendship, and living with the consequences of one’s choices.

Peek between the pages...

It wasn’t the things I remembered that scared the crap out of me. It was the things I didn’t.

Take that night, for instance. I knew I’d been at the same party as my fifteen-year-old sister. She’d been laughing at something her friend had said. Caleb Higgins, the guy I’d been crushing on senior year, had come over to talk to me. I remembered feeling panicked at some point during the party and hearing my friends’ heart-stopping screams. But my strongest memory—the one that haunts me even now as I run my hand over the smooth skin on my stomach—was of the sharp pain that had pierced my body just below my rib cage. I’d thought I’d died. Thought I’d glimpsed the Bright Light. But soon after, I wasn’t sure of anything. Like how I’d ended up at the hospital. There was no mistaking that’s where I was. I recognized the curved wooden reception desk in the waiting room from the time my sister had broken her arm.

I stood near the closed double doors leading into the emergency room, wearing dirty jeans, baby-blue flip-flops, and a too-thin, pale-rose tank top, freezing my butt off. Why were hospitals always so cold? Seriously, there were sick people there. A little heat might have done them wonders.

A disbelieving giggle bubbled up my throat. The temperature in the waiting room was the least of my worries.

I’m delighted with the feedback I’ve received.

Inspiration Behind Damned When I Didn't

Romance is all about relationships: the good, the bad, and the awkward, and there is no one more awkward than an eighteen-year-old virgin thrown into the life of a succubus. And that’s exactly what happens to my kind-hearted protagonist Avery Williams in Damned When I Didn’t.

Now, for those who don’t know, a succubus is a female demon who survives by having intimate relationships with humans. Normally, the steamier the better. But we have to cut Avery some slack. She is a teenager, and this is a young adult novel. Luckily, a long, meaningful kiss will sustain her for a few days. She’s paired with Cole, her Hell-assigned mentor, who must get her to ditch her mild manners, or they’ll both face Hell’s wrath.

I had a lot of fun writing this novel. The premise blossomed from my desire to write something that hasn’t been done already, which isn’t easy when there are so many amazing paranormal books. Well, I’ve never read or seen a YA book where the protagonist is a succubus. And then I thought, wouldn’t it be ironic if the succubus in my book was a virgin? How would that work? Why Hell? And how did she end up a succubus? Could she survive? Would she want to?

Discover the answer to these questions and more in the book.

Damned When I Didn't

Death isn’t the end for eighteen-year-old Avery Williams, and her final resting place isn’t beyond the Golden Gates. No, the Queen of the Damned has plans for her and, unbeknownst to Avery, fought hard to gain possession of her soul.

As Hell’s newest succubus, Avery is expected to siphon life from the living. It only takes a long, meaningful kiss, but for a virgin like Avery, kissing guys she barely knows isn’t something she’s comfortable doing. Avery focuses on the upside of her fate—she’ll be returning home, or so she thinks. When the Queen of the Damned cuts her off from her old life, Avery is determined to find a way back to her family and friends, even if it means facing Hell’s fury if she’s caught.

Teaser:

His laughter bellowed out of the small bathroom. “You’re going to have to loosen up if we’re going to be living together.”

     “Do not!” I called back.

The shower started, but he’d left the door open. “Succubi are supposed to be promiscuous. Not shriek at the sight of a naked man.”

“Well, I’m not most succubi, and you’re not a man,” I retorted.

My jaw dropped when I opened the closet and found it stuffed with clothes. The things on the right were obviously Cole’s. A hint of his cologne wafted from them. The left side, however, was crammed with juniors’ jeans, skirts, tops, sweaters—everything I could possibly want and not department store knock-offs. Designer brands that I used to dream of owning.

I fanned through the various items, wishing I had time to try them all on. If my best friend knew the road to Hell was stocked with the best clothes, she’d purchase a first-class ticket.

“So I’m not a man?” Cole asked from behind me.

He leaned against the doorframe, wearing a towel that conveniently hung low enough to emphasize his six-pack abs and the muscles leading to…you know. He didn’t bother to dry off either. His chest glistened with water droplets.

“I have parts that beg to differ,” he added.
