As I wait...

Edits for Embrace are done. My amazing editor has passed the manuscript on to the next person in the process. I'm back to waiting while they check that all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed.

Being a writer comes with a lot of waiting.

So what does a writer do while they wait? I can’t speak for everyone, but I like to catch up on my reading. The pile of books wanting for my attention is growing and my to-read list on Good Reads is even longer. I also work on other projects. I’m currently finishing edits of a middle grade ghost story and I'm excited about revisiting a YA paranormal  I wrote last year. I actually could use a clone, because there just aren't enough hours in the day to work on both.

And then the season premieres of my favorite shows are this month, so I know what I'll be doing for two hours a week.

I'd love to hear from you. I’m curious, what do you do to keep busy while you wait? Do you start another project or take a break from writing? Any shows coming out this season that you're excited about?

  1. Waiting is the toughest part! The only thing that helps me is writing. I have to keep working, otherwise I lose my mind. Vampire Diaries and Supernatural doesn't hurt.

  2. I don't get to focust on the "act of waiting"...or rather, my life doesn't allow for much of it. Keeping a full time paying gig and single parenting can be busy enough. Then I'm writing and blogging and sneaking in some bed time, you know, to maintain my sanity. But even then, with all the business of life, I still have to play the waiting game for many of the reasons you mention, like the queries and feedback. Sheesh :-)

  3. I start writing something else.

Or I do a lot of yoga and pilates.

Sometimes I'll watch an entire season of a show I've always wanted to watch but never had time in like 2 or 3 days.

  4. Angela, I have a full time job too... that does keep me busy.

Cynthia, I did watch Charmed last winter between writing. It was one of those series that people kept saying, I can't believe you haven't seen it. Took more awhile to get through a season, but it was a nice break when I was burnt out on writing.

  5. I always have projects going on (as you know!) so that I can't be anxious about the waiting. And is Supernatural good? My husband would (probably) never watch it, but it sounds cool. :)

  7. Susan, I really like Supernatural. The writers did an incredible job with the story and the actors make the characters believable. I would suggest starting with season 1 though. There is a lot of back story that gets the boys to where they are in season 7.

Bersedia, thanks for stopping by! It's great to meet you.

  8. While I wait, I try to catch up on reading, too. But I also mull over the next idea. I love writing, and by the time my first book hits bookstore shelves, I want to have at least two more ready for publication.

Thanks for dropping by my blog today :)

  9. I usually take a bit of a break. Like you, I try to catch up on my reading. I'm excited about a seasons of Dr. Who and Dancing with the Stars. :-)

  10. Reading and Supernatural. I don't watch a lot of tv, a few hours a week and some weeks not at all. When I do watch a show it's generally got some type of supernatural creatures. I've recently discovered glee through my son.

  11. Congrats on getting through round one of edits! I found it was the longest round for me, so hopefully there will be less waiting in the future. Omnific has accepted my next novel but I'm waiting to hear when we'll get started editing, so I hear ya on the impatience thing. I like to read as well, and am catching up on the romantic suspense genre as well as keeping up with book club selections. My favorite TV show right now is Project Runway

  12. It's always fun to hear what others are watching on TV. I have to admit, I don't watch much television. Most the time it's the two shows above. I'll have to check out the ones you have mentioned.

Thanks Jennifer! I did find revisions to be fun, even though at times it was a lot of work. Knowing every change was improving the story made it worth it.

It sounds like we all do pretty much the same thing while we wait. Must be a writer thing.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Distraction is definitely what works for me. And praying to help me not to worry about what might be happening with the things I'm not in control of.

Last night was the season premier of Modern Family---hilarious. I've also been a diehard Survivor fan, but I dunno...jut not feeling it this time. But we're only two episodes in so I won't call it quits yet.

  14. I start writing the next book.
Congratulations on your first! Your world is about to change. Trust me.

  15. Hi Nicki. Yes, distractions are good. The more the better!

Alex, thanks! And thanks for stopping by.

  16. I was bounced here. Haha. I don't do much of this waiting yet. I'm predominantly on the editing side of things (editing for others) right now, though I am trying to focus on my poetry whenever I can. When I *do* have free time, though. I prefer Dexter, True Blood, or, currently, Honey and Clover (anime) on Netflix. Supernatural's good too, though. :D

  17. Hi Lauren. Thanks for hopping over to my blog. I do like True Blood, although I missed the latest season.

Editing is always rewarding and it's fun to see a story come together. Thanks for leaving a comment and best wishes on your writing!
