New Release: HOLD TIGHT, book two in Embrace Series

After months of revising, organizing, and preparing HOLD TIGHT is now available, and I couldn't be more excited. I'd like to thank Omnific Publishing and the entire HT Team for all their hard work in getting this book ready for today.

What's one little spell?

When you’re new to magic, one spell can be the difference between getting what you want...and ruining the lives of everyone you love.

Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. She and her boyfriend -and fellow witch- can’t even enjoy a simple kiss without getting shocked when their powers collide. Instead of mastering her new skills, though, Madison is stuck watching her kid brother and doing chores.

But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she's the next victim of a threat she's powerless to resist...and there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.

Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.

Change is coming: News, First peek at HOLD TIGHT, and a Giveaway

I’ve been hinting to a big change, and I can finally share the news.

Embrace is getting a fresh look with a brand new cover, and I’m geeked for the reveal later this month. I’ve gotten a sneak peek at the new design and I’m beyond thrilled. It’s stunning and mysterious and I love it.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the original cover (on the left). I thought the image of the girl looking at something just out of view reflected the mystery of what Madison Riley discovers in Embrace.

I wrote Embrace to be a standalone novel, so the publisher and I weren’t thinking about a second book or its cover when Embrace’s was designed. But when readers kept asking if there’d be a sequel my creative wheels started to turn and I began work on another book.

I had so much fun being back with Madison and the gang. The stakes are higher this time. In Hold Tight Madison unknowingly invites two dangerous yet enticing beings into her life, what she needs now is to figure out which one she can trust and how to get rid of the other before either destroys her and everyone she loves

I was delighted when Omnific Publishing picked it up. Then it came time to design the cover and finding the perfect image for book two that fit the story and matched Embrace’s was difficult. So my wonderful marketing associate and I got to talking about other options. The result was a whole new look for book one.

It’s been exciting to see the preliminary designs. A Tale of Many Reviews is hosting the cover reveal for both books on June 26th. I can’t wait to share them with you! Until then I have a first peek at Hold Tight coupled with an excerpt from Embrace plus a chance to win a $10 gift card.

EMBRACE excerpt

“I’m beginning to realize I’d do whatever it took to keep someone I care about safe—expose what I am, harness my anger, let my darker side take over. That’s one promise I know I can make without regret.”
[…]
I was about to protest when he then asked, “What about you? Just what are your feelings toward me?” I must have hesitated because he laughed, light and warm, yet there was a bitter edge to it. “I just told you I’d embrace the dark to protect you, and you still can’t open up to me?”

HOLD TIGHT excerpt – exclusive first peek!

A soft swish hum had me glancing around the kitchen again. A cool breeze stirred the curtains and rippled the water in the bowl. I hurried and closed the window, but then a quiet buzz traveled around the kitchen like an angry fly. For a moment, I could have sworn I smelled fresh-cut orchids, but when I inhaled, the air chilled my lungs, causing me to cough. No matter which direction I looked, no one was there.

“Finish it,” a disembodied voice whispered eagerly.

Round One: Hold Tight Update

Last week I finished the first round of revisions on Hold Tight. That made me curious as to how many days are left until book two in the Embrace series is available. I decided to create a quick countdown clock. I'm not sure if that was my best idea, because it made me realize that there are less than 100 days to release date. Wow, it's creeping up quickly!

I actually love to revise, especially when I have feedback from my critique partners, beta readers, or my editor. Knowing what’s working and what didn't quite do the trick lets me know where I need to focus my energy.

This round of revisions was based on my editor's feedback, and she's absolutely amazing. She gets my novel and my characters as well as I do. She’ll point out when she feels a character’s behavior seems out-of-character and she sandwiches the bad between the good. You know, she’ll start with a comment along the lines of I really like how you…. Before a note like there’s something not quite right with the scene with Isaac….

There I was with pages of notes and an 80,000-word manuscript waiting to be improved. As I said I like revising, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t times when I had to take a deep breath and think through how I could address different issues. I re-wrote a good chuck of two chapters, added and deleted different sections throughout the book, and breathed several sighs of relief when I’d hit a chapter that didn’t need any change (at this time, anyway). The good news is I can see how the changes make the writing stronger. I think I managed to answer questions a reader might have at different points in the story, leaving less doubt and hopefully allowing him or her to stay wrapped in the action. And on that chapter that wasn’t working, I think the replacement scene flows so much better. It’s definitely less weird. (In the original chapter a lot of the action happened out of Madison’s line of sight.)

I'm happy to report that round one of revisions are done. I’m anxiously waiting for round two, dying to see if what I did works or if I still have some major changes ahead of me. The cover is in the works. One more thing I’m anxiously waiting to see. To keep myself busy, I've been planning some fun events and cool swag.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Teaser:

He leaned in closer to me. His eyes were a shimmering, deep brown, but there was a speck of ocean blue at the edge of his right iris. I couldn’t remember what I was about to say. My heart did a pirouette in my chest, and my breath caught in my throat. I closed the distance between us. His lips were firm and warm, and I wanted to kiss him forever.

Meet the newest character in the EMBRACE sequel

Thanks to everyone who
participated in the Vote to Win contest.

The name with the most votes is . . .

drum roll please

(throws confetti)

Dellis
entered by C.J. Cantilena

The truth is I've been calling him Zion - Kashmeir - Dellis for a few weeks now and I've sort of grown attached to all the names.

And he is a faery, after all. Did I mention that?? If not, the cat's out of the bag now.

In some lore humans can control a faery if they know his or her full name. My book follows this lore. While I had only planned to add the winning name in the character name I came up with, I'm already missing Zion and Kashmeir. So, I've decided to use the three finalists as part of my character's name and then use the winner as the name that readers will learn in the book.

Without further ado
I'm pleased to introduce to you

 Dellis Zion Kashmeir ...
(I'm withholding the rest of his name as to help him keep his secret.
I'm sure you understand.)

What do we know about him so far? Well,
he’s a male in his late teens with stormy white
eyes and pale blond hair. He’s one of three
supernatural creatures being introduced in
the EMBRACE sequel HOLD TIGHT.

Congratulations to the winners of the contest:

C.J. Cantilena
Submitter of the winning name Dellis

and

Molly Nudo Frenzel
Lucky voter

Since I decided to use all three names, I will be sending Dave Martinez (submitter of the name Zion) and Alexis Peplow (submitter of the name Kashmeir) an ebook of EMBRACE or a $5 gift card (their choice) as a consolation prize.

Thanks to all the students who entered names! You guys came up with some great suggestions!

Vote to Win: Help Name a Character in the EMBRACE sequel

HOLD TIGHT, the sequel to EMBRACE, introduces new supernatural beings and I asked teens to help me name one of them.

Here’s what I told them about the character:
Male in his late teens, stormy white eyes and
pale blond hair. His glamour gives him the
appearance of having honey brown hair & pale
blue eyes. Think pretty boy appearance.

The response was huge. There were so many great names entered that I had a hard time narrowing them down to three, so I took out my trusty hat, tossed in over twenty names, and had my son pull three out.

                            And the finalists are:

Zion, entered by Dave Martinez
Kashmeir, entered by Alexis Peplow
Dellis, entered by C.J. Cantilena

Here's where I need your help. Vote for the name you like best. The student who entered the name that receives the most votes and one lucky voter will each win an autographed copy of EMBRACE plus swag or a $15 gift card to Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or Starbucks. (Due to the cost of shipping, contest open to US residents only. International residents are still welcome to cast a vote.)

Here’s how it works. There are three Rafflecopter forms below. Find the form for the name you like best, click “Vote for …”  It's that easy. Plus, there are four additional ways to vote and be entered to win. Come back daily to vote for your favorite name and increase your chances of winning.

Good luck!

School Visit

Last week, I was at Bartlett High School talking about life as an author. First thing I noticed is the front row is still the last row to fill up. Of course, I gave this some thought. When I was in high school, I chose a seat somewhere in the middle to the back of the room too. Now, I'm fine with sitting in that first row. So what's changed? Well, there's the cool factor. Picking a seat in the middle will allow you to hear without appearing too eager to be there. Then, of course, as an adult I'm probably paying to be there so you can bet I want to hear what the speaker has to say.

Seriously, though, the staff and students were very welcoming and it was wonderful to talk with them.

As I did at my last school visit, I invited students to help name a character in the EMBRACE sequel HOLD TIGHT. I'll be selecting three names to go on to the finals. The student who entered the name that receives the most votes will win a fabulous prize and one lucky voter will also have a chance to win. Voting starts May 22nd. Be sure to stop back for more information on that!

What did students want to know about an author's life?

  (Q) Have I ever based a character on someone I know?
  (A) Not entirely, but my characters do share small traits with my family and friends.

  (Q) What tips do I have for overcoming writer's block?
  (A) My top tip was to walk away from your computer and do something else. When this doesn't work, I start to ask myself what if,  jotting down lots of ideas until one resonates with me. Something else I do a lot when I'm writing the first draft is to skip the section I'm stuck on. It's often easier to come back and write the middle once I know what happens later in the book. Click here to see the post I recently did on conquering writer's block.

This last question came up after I mentioned that I don't read books containing the same supernatural element as the book I'm working on. For instance, I won't read a book with angels in it if I'm writing a book with angels. This is so I don't inadvertently copys what another author has done.

  (Q) Have I ever found that I've copied from another book.
  (A) No. Well, I sure hope not. But my critique group doesn't hesitate to mention if something reminds them of another book and I love them for that.

What are high schoolers reading? Ellen Hopkins' novels and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher were among the titles mentioned.

I’d like to thank the school for having me. It was truly great to be there.

And the winners are...

Congratulations to the winners of the EMBRACE Blog Tour Giveaways!

Grand Prize:
Tammy Sparks

e-book Winners:
Tiff P., Sarah Guthall, Tayte Hunter, Kelly Fox,
Nata ArtistaDonna, Crystal Williams Fulcher, Vivian, Christina,
Linda, Krista Bookreview, Shadow Kohler, Rob Zimmermann

The tour officially ended last night with a Twitter chat. It was so much fun to talk to readers. Thank you everyone who joined us! Some of you already know that I'm working on a sequel. Last night I announced the title on Twitter. For those who weren't able to join us, the title is...

drum roll please...

HOLD TIGHT

Which fits this book because Madison will be forced to hold onto everything she knows and holds dear to her in the next book.

With the tour over, I'll be focusing on finishing this book. The first draft is done. I already gave myself a couple of weeks to enjoy this accomplishment and now I'm working on draft two, focusing on the intricate details of the plot and the small details of each scene. It's been so much fun to be back with Madison and her friends. Plus there are new characters being introduced along with new supernatural elements. I really can't say much more. For those of you who read the back cover of EMBRACE, you already know I like letting the reader learn what's happening right along with Madison.

That's all for me today.

Today's Thursday, which means it's time for Omnific Publishing's Author! Author! Blog Bounce. For more information click here.
