#IWSG Social Media Dos and Don'ts

Hi everyone!

Don't forget to stop by Alex's blog for a special announcement. (I'm not sure what it is (since I'm typing this the day before), but I'm excited to find out!

I'll be co-hosting SCBWI Food for Thought this month with my good friends, authors Kym Brunner and Katie Sparks. Our topic is Social Media for Scaredy Cats, and my section is on Twitter. So, to have a little fun with this, I created my very first You Tube video. I'd love to get your thoughts, suggestions are welcome.

Twitter Dos and Don'ts for Writers

Are you active on Twitter, Instagram or another social media site? Do you have any pet peeves when it comes to social media? What's your favorite platform? Any suggestions for writers?

If you have a Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest or Facebook account, I'd love to connect (if we haven't already)! Just leave your links in the comments, and I'll find you. Or follow my links on the side bar.

This post is part of IWSG. A big thanks to Alex Cavanaugh and our co-hosts for keeping this group going. For those who aren't familiar with Insecure Writer's Support Group, just follow the link. It's a wonderful group.

  1. Great video! The advice is simple and easy to follow while having a big impact on Twitterlife. I think the advice to be yourself but not over share is especially wise.

    1. Thanks for chiming in! I'm glad you liked the video. It's my first, so I'm a little nervous about it.

  2. I have my blog and use twitter 'sporadically.' You can find me @SuzanneFurness btw! Great little clip of do's and don'ts. I dislike over promotion.

    1. I dislike that too. You have one more follower :)

  3. You made that video? Great job! I don't interact regularly on Twitter because I'm mostly on Facebook but I have been more discerning in following back lately.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it. I check who the person is before following back, too.

  4. Great job on the video! I'm terrible at Twitter so this is helpful for me. I'm definitely a scaredy cat LOL.
So great to meet you through IWSG! I'm @JulesFlanders on Twitter.

    1. Twitter can be a scary app, but if you're yourself, you're sure to be a hit.

  6. Great tips! I am trying out a few things with Twitter. Less promos and more writing and personal tweets. I get more interaction that way. I haven't hopped on the Instagram boat yet because I'm one of the very few people left in first world without a cell phone! *LOL*

    1. No cell? I can't imagine not having mine. Less promos and more writing and personal tweets is a good approach to Twitter.

  7. Blogging is definitely my #1 social media choice. I'm on Twitter too, but I still have lots to learn there. I used to follow back people who followed me, but stopped as some profiles were definitely dodgy. Thank you so much for sharing these great tips.

    1. I think many of us followed back blindly at first. I probably could use to do some house cleaning myself. Glad the video is okay.

  8. Two thumbs up for the video! I made the boo boo of blindly over following when I started Twitter. I've got to get the Twitter broom out and do some housecleaning.

    1. Thanks! I was nervous about it, but the program made it easy to create the video.

  10. Thanks for sharing the Twitter tips. I need to pop over and read your series for Twitter Scaredy Cats. I blog and I've been on FB for ages, but I seldom even get on it anymore. I initially got on FB to stalk my kids and make sure they weren't doing anything inappropriate. Then they moved to Twitter ... and so did I. I actually love Twitter, but even after a year, I still feel like I'm doing something wrong or I just can't quite get the hang of it. Ditto for Instagram. On instagram I feel like I haven't been given the secret code or handshake yet, LOL. On Twitter, I get lots of nice followers, but I seem to get a lot of eggheads as well and don't know how to stop them from spamming or following.

Now my kids have moved on to Vine and SnapChat and other places where I truly feel like an intruder from out of space.

I love your video. I can't believe it is your first one. It's amazing. It's nice to connect with you. I already clicked over and followed you on Twitter and FB and Pinterest.

  11. I don't like twets which are quotes from the author's book. Out of context they rarely make sense.
